Banning the New F-Word

by The Insider 2:59 mins

Just last week, an edited video of ESPN reporter Britt McHenry’s tirade against a towing-company employee went viral, bringing the issue of fat shaming to the forefront. Although she apologized, the incident prompted the Obesity Action Coalition to speak out. Melinda J. Watman, chair of the coalition’s Weight Bias Committee, said, “The AMA has said obesity, is a disease. People need to start thinking about it that way, just like cancer and diabetes and high blood pressure.” But is calling someone fat as offensive as mocking someone for having a serious illness, or is it simply an insult? On Sunday night, Grammy-winning singer Sam Smith spoke about the issue on Australia’s “60 Minutes,” explaining how being called “fat” hurts him more than hateful slurs regarding his sexuality. And just last week, Britney Spears shot back at a heckler for reportedly calling her a “fat bitch” during her Las Vegas show. Fat shaming has become a problem from which no one is exempt. Check out this video to go inside the controversy of the new F-word, and tune in to “The Insider With Yahoo” on TV tonight for the latest in entertainment news.
