In addition to being incredibly action-packed, the world of The Road Warrior has always been a little bit loopy. The plot details of the long-in-development-hell, fourth film in the post-apocalyptic Aussie franchise have finally been announced by Mad Max creator and director George Miller, employing some creatively named characters and nicely incorporating the term "word burgers" in the logline.
"Mad Max is caught up with a group of people fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by the Imperator Furiosa. This movie is an account of the Road War which follows. It is based on the Word Burgers of the History Men and eyewitness accounts of those who survived," says Miller of the Fury Road plot.
Tom Hardy takes over the title role of Max Rockatansky from Mel Gibson, while a close-cropped Charlize Theron plays the role of Imperator Furiosa. The rest of the cast includes Nathan Jones as Rictus Erectus, Nicholas Hoult as Nux, Hugh Keays-Byrne as Immortan Joe, Abbey Lee Kershaw as The Dag, Courtney Eaton as Fragile, Josh Helman as Slit, Jennifer Hagan as Miss Giddy, and singer/songwriter/performer iOTA as Coma-Doof Warrior. Also, collectively known as The Wives are Zoe Kravitz as Toast, Riley Keough as Capable and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley as Splendid.
Principal photography on the dystopian film started on July 9 in Africa "with the support of the Australian government," as Miller explains that the film was originally slated to be shot in Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia, but "the production was forced to relocate due to severe flooding, rendering the Australian landscape unsuitable for the film. The rain turned the area into an oasis instead of the post-apocalyptic terrain that is the setting for Max's world."
I can't wait for this one, and I think Hardy is ideal casting in this continuation of the franchise. Hopefully the film will take its cues from the ironic, more subtle satire of The Road Warrior as opposed to the outright silliness of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.
