The "Shadow Days" singer, 34, debuted a sleek new 'do August 25 at The Hollywood Reporter's party to celebrate Mindy Kaling's new FOX comedy series, The Mindy Project.

The musician stopped by stylist Sally Hershberger's L.A. salon the day prior to get his hair makeover. "I was was thinking the night before that I wanted to cut his hair off, and when John came into the salon that is exactly what he wanted to do without me saying a word," Hershberger told Haute Living. "We have a flow that just works."

Hershberger -- best-known for creating Meg Ryan's signature shag in '90s -- has also worked with celebrities including Michelle Pfeiffer, Jane Fonda and Calista Flockhart.

Mayer, who was forced to cancel his tour earlier this year due to recurring throat problems, will perform at the Levon Helm tribute concert October 3 at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. He was recently romantically linked to pop star Katy Perry, 27.
