For GOOP readers who wonder how Gwyneth Paltrow can afford to spend so much money on clothes and food, recent photos of her wearing a risqué dress with see-through panels at the Los Angeles "Iron Man 3" premiere reveal the slender blonde's frugal fashion secret: she doesn't buy underwear.
Seriously, People magazine's most beautiful woman likely knew what she was doing when she went commando to the red carpet event. Despite telling Ellen DeGeneres she was "humiliated" by the fashion flub, she knew the stunt would focus the media spotlight on her at the star-studded gathering.
Appearing on the comedienne's talk show today, the 40-year-old actress did not provide a plausible explanation for baring her butt. "Oh, I kind of had a disaster," she told Ellen. "I was doing a show and I changed there and I went [and] I couldn't wear underwear."
If the last sentence doesn't parse, it's because there really is no good explanation for the actress wearing no underwear under her Antonio Berardi gown except that it was a deliberate bid for attention. It's hard to imagine the actress decided to wear the designer dress without first trying it on and realizing the wide side panels were made of see-through material.
Or are we to believe Paltrow is so nonchalant about haute couture she threw the dress in her bag as if it were workout clothes to change into for an after-work tryst with the treadmill?
Though she acted embarrassed while discussing the incident with Ellen, the results prove her fashion strategy worked. Not only did the dress create a buzz (never has there been so much talk about "side-butt"), its transparency proved the fitness nut does not need Spanx to squeeze into tight spaces.
Celebrity watchers have long known the actress who plays Pepper Potts craves adulation like Polly wants crackers, especially attention that focuses on her figure. At the Brentwood opening of her fitness mentor Tracy Anderson's health club recently, Paltrow bragged about trying on bathing suits with a friend. "I said, 'You know, this isn't so bad for 40, right?'" she said of her butt. "And [my friend] goes, 'It's not so bad for a 22-year-old stripper!'"
