Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are now the proud parents of a pun -- they've named their daughter North West.
The couple will reportedly call their baby girl Nori for short since North sounds a little strange, and right now the reason behind their unusual name choice remains a mystery. So of course, it's time to start speculating about why Kimye decided to go with the memorable moniker.
There aren't enough punny names in Hollywood
Using first and last names to create a pun doesn't seem to be very popular with famous parents, so Kim and Kanye probably knew that their daughter's moniker would make her stand out from all the other celeb kids with strange names. They really only had to top "Numb3rs" actor Rob Morrow, who named his daughter Tu Morrow. It might sound silly, but it's actually a tradition in his family -- his wife's name is Debbon Ayer.
Other celebrities have used variations of the name "Kaidence"
There were rumors that Kim was a fan of the musical name Kaidence, but perhaps it just wasn't unique enough for Kanye. Rapper T-Pain has a son named Kaydnz Kodah Najm, and skateboarder Tony Hawk has a daughter named Kadence.
Kim's favorite punny name was already taken
Back in March, Kim revealed that she was a fan of a different directional name during an appearance on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno." She claimed that the name North wasn't on her and Kanye's list of options at the time, and she said that she liked the moniker Easton West instead. However, actress Jenna Elfman already has a son named Easton Quinn. So, once again, the name Kim had in mind just wasn't one-of-a-kind.
The name is perfect for branding
If Kanye and his daughter collaborate on a line of couture kids' clothing in the future, then they'll absolutely have to call it "North by Northwest." It's actually not hard to imagine Kanye creating children's fashions based on the works of director Alfred Hitchcock.
Kanye is letting the world know that his daughter is no Kardashian
During an interview with The New York Times, Kanye said this about his daughter: "I just don't want to talk to America about my family. Like, this is my baby. This isn't America's baby." This makes it pretty clear that Kanye doesn't want his child to live the same super-exposed life that Kim has experienced, and refusing to continue Kris Jenner's "K" name tradition might be one way that he's trying to distance his daughter from the Kardashians' reality show world.
Their daughter can claim that she's already been published in Vanity Fair
Did you know that Knorth West has been blogging for Vanity Fair from the womb? There's a blog written from the unique point of view of Kim's daughter, who apparently decided to drop the "K" in her name after making her grand entrance. The baby formerly known as Knorth has been writing about Kim's plans to eat placenta; her pregnancy fashion; and even Kim's ex-hubby Kris Humphries. So at least she has some idea of what she's getting herself into.
