No one can say Anderson Cooper doesn't have a sense of humor about being gay.
The CNN anchor, who came out in an open letter earlier this year, spoke candidly — and hilariously — about his sexual orientation during an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman Friday.
At one point Cooper, whose own daytime talk show was recently canceled, joked that he was drunk after downing a glass of Scotch that Letterman had poured at the start of the interview — prompting Letterman to attempt a congratulatory fist-bump.
"Dave, I'm gay," Cooper told him. "We don't do this kind of thing."
"I wish I had a nickel for every time I've heard that in my life," Letterman responded.
Letterman asked Cooper about covering the election as well as Hurricane Sandy, but also inquired about his "gaydar" — the ability to determine whether someone is gay or not by just looking at them.
"I'm pinging off the hook about you, Dave," Cooper quipped, before clarifying that "there's not a secret code that we've all learned from a young age. There's not a secret handshake."
When Letterman brought up Cooper's letter and asked about his decision to come out as "a homosexual," Cooper corrected him, saying, "We prefer the term 'light in the loafers.'"
