2014 has to be better, right?
Tori Spelling is putting on a happy face as she wishes fans a happy new year, but we're thinking she's more than happy to say goodbye to 2013!
Amid scathing year-end headlines about hubby Dean McDermott's alleged fling with a 28-year-old Canadian woman, Spelling cheered the arrival of 2014 via a blog post on her website, posting a cuddly family New Year's pic of herself, McDermott, and two of their kids, Liam, 6, and Stella, 5, with the caption: "Time flies when you're having fun… and when you have 4 little ones running around! We rang in the New Year with (kid-friendly) cocktails, lots of yummy treats and some quality family time. Cheers to another year of crafting, cooking, party-planning, family memories, fashion statements, love fests, lots of cozy time, and of course... blogging!"
2013 was indeed an unlucky year for the popular actress-author, so it can only go up from here.
Last spring, the 40-year-old mom of four took to her blog to pen an angry response to a Star magazine cover story that reported that she and McDermott were splitting in a $300 million divorce. She slammed the tabloid after her kids saw the shocking headlines in a supermarket checkout line, writing: "Keep them out of it! You want to make inaccurate low blows at someone Star? Go for me! I can handle it. I always have. But don't do it to a man that has done nothing but loved me and our children."
More bad luck came in March, when her son Liam's 6th birthday bash was interrupted by an injury. A rep for the family told omg! that McDermott missed the "Star Wars" themed party due to a trip to the emergency room after his teen son Jack (from his first marriage to Canadian TV host Mary Jo Eustace) broke his nose in the "bouncy house" before the party. Ouch!
The family also came under fire last spring after tweeting about taking family showers with their kids. McDermott told Extra TV that the clan looked at it as a "a wonderful bonding experience," while Spelling added: "It's a family tradition when they're like 2 months old. We started bringing the babies in the shower and getting them used to the water. I'm going to drive the point home… You try having four small children 6 and under -- 6 months to 6 years -- and having to bathe each one individually. It takes up a lot of time, so don't give us any grief."
Later in the year, Spelling made headlines with her latest memoir, Spelling It Like It Is, which detailed her family's financial woes. After she revealed that her husband decided against getting a vasectomy because money was so tight, McDermott had to repeatedly clarify the controversial quote, telling Access Hollywood: "I went to a particular doctor because he's the best at [vasectomy] reversals and he doesn't take insurance and the estimate was pretty high … So I didn't pursue it." (The actor also explained to Us Weekly: "Could we afford a vasectomy? Probably. Was it a tougher time for us financially? Yea. For sure. That's just the truth of it -- it's the nature of this business.")
And Spelling was in the hot seat during a November visit to CBS' "The Talk." That's when she had to defend her memoir chapter about a stolen sex tape, which was allegedly hacked by a biker friend of her husband's. After explaining that the "personal" video was taken by the acquaintance who'd been house sitting for them, she vowed that she'd never allow a "sex tape" to go out if the footage was ever to surface. "Give me some credit, I'm a mom of four," she said.
Coming up in 2014: Tori, Dean, and the entire McDermott family will head back to reality TV with a new show, "Tori & Dean: Cabin Fever," while McDermott will lunch his first cookbook, The Gourmet Dad, in the spring.
