Fans were shocked when photos of Vanessa Hudgens on the set of her new film "Gimme Shelter" were released earlier this week. With her new chopped locks and grungy attire, the Disney darling could easily be confused with a bum! But for the 22-year-old actress, it's all part of the job. Not only did she chop her hair into a disheveled pixie cut, but she also gained 10 pounds in order to play a pregnant teen who is forced to survive on the streets after being kicked out of her home!

Props to Vanessa Hudgens for taking the chance to step out of her comfort zone, could this be the role that catapults her into Hollywood superstardom? Only time will tell, but she's joining a long list of actresses who have dressed down, gained weight, or literally transformed themselves for the sake of their art. So we've compiled a list of the...

1. Renee Zellweger

Renee Zellweger is known for being one of Hollywood's most slim and sexy stars, but to play the lead in "Bridget Jones's Diary," she abandoned the salad bar and gym in order to pack on 30 pounds as the curvaceous Bridget Jones. But even while dressed down, and with her weight up, Zellweger looked great (arguably, much healthier) in character. Audiences couldn't get enough of the lovably flawed Bridget Jones and her hilarious love-life! "Bridget Jones's Diary" became a hit.

2. Mariah Carey

How do you recover from a box office disaster like "Glitter?" Show the world you're willing to trade in your sparkly mini dress for an ill-fitting cardigan and stringy hair! Mariah Carey's performance as counselor Mrs. Weiss in the film "Precious" proved to the world, and critics alike, that this diva was willing to play a role that was less than glamorous.

3. Cameron Diaz

Cameron Diaz made a splash in Hollywood after appearing as Jim Carrey's object of affection in "The Mask." Since her big-screen debut, this former model has had no problem landing acting gigs. But her role as Lotte Schwartz in "Being John Malkovich" required her to go from hottie to homely. With the help of a make-up artist, Diaz ditched her sleek blonde hair for a frizzy wig and wore brown contacts in order to embody the character who fantasizes about being a man.

4. Hilary Swank

Hilary Swank's had her fair share of stunning red carpet moments, but her career-changing moment happened when chopped off her hair and dressed in jeans and button-down shirts in order to play a transgendered man in the controversial film "Boys Don't Cry." Although the actress was cast when she was relatively unknown, the role changed Swank's career. Not only did she impress audiences, but she also took home the Academy Award for Best Actress.

5. Charlize Theron

In the early stages of her acting career, Charlize Theron was known more for her classic good looks and flawless physique than her acting chops. All that changed when she landed the role of a lifetime as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in "Monster." Theron blew critics out of the water as she transformed into a barely recognizable character with sallow skin, thinning hair and an additional 30 pounds on her previously slim frame. Her dedication to the role paid off when she was awarded with an Academy Award for her mesmerizing performance.
