Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes Get Lawyers: Hollywood's Worst Custody Battles

Yahoo Contributor Network

Just days after the shocking announcement that Katie Holmes was divorcing Tom Cruise, the two are preparing their lawyers for what could be an ugly custody battle. Katie is seeking sole custody of daughter Suri, but Tom might have some issues with that. He reportedly will do whatever it takes to ensure that his little girl is raised as a Scientologist, something that allegedly doesn't set well with his estranged wife. This could wind up being a very ugly war in the courts, and that's nothing new in the celebrity community. Here is a look back at some of the worst Hollywood custody battles over the years.

Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger

It seems like the custody war between these two never ended. In 2000, the power couple separated and eventually divorced a short time later. In 2004, Alec finally won joint legal custody of daughter Ireland but later filed claims that Kim was blocking him from seeing her. That led to years of bickering between the two both inside and outside of the courtroom. In the end, there were nearly 100 court proceedings and a lot of bad feelings. After a scathing voicemail that Alec left his daughter became public, the actor considered ending his life. "I began to think about what little town I would repair to in order to commit suicide," he said in 2008. "And then you, obviously you say, well, what would that do to my child if I killed myself? Me, I really didn't care about me."

Charlie Sheen and Denise Richards

Things might be civil between the two exes now, but it wasn't always so rosy. After splitting in 2006, the two battled for years for custody of their two daughters. At one point, Denise accused her ex-husband of viewing child pornography and also claimed that he had texted her saying that he wished she had cancer. In 2008, the two had a war of words after Charlie claimed that his ex-wife wanted his sperm for a third child. Despite all of this, they have somehow buried the hatchet and found a measure of respect for each other.

Woody Allen and Mia Farrow

After it came to light that the Oscar winning director had been having an affair with Mia's adopted daughter, the relationship between the two came to a crashing halt. After the split, they fought for custody of their one biological child and the two they had adopted together. At one point, she accused Woody of molesting their adopted son Dylan. In the end, Mia won sole custody and Woody remains estranged from his kids. This past Father's Day, son Ronan took to Twitter to take a shot at his dad. "Happy father's day -- or as they call it in my family, happy brother-in-law's day," he tweeted.
