Tom has been married to longtime love Rita Wilson for many years.

Friday evening Nick Lachey and Vanessa Minnillo tied the knot, while earlier in the day Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony's publicist released a statement confirming that the couple, married in 2007, had decided to call the whole thing off . This is Nick's second marriage, his first famously sparking and fizzling out on the MTV reality show Newlyweds and J.Lo's third divorce.

The fickle nature of Hollywood combined with its need for storybook endings does not usually bode well for the marriages it fosters, which begs the question: what's the secret to making it work? Here are some tips from a few celebrity couples who seem to have it figured out.

Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell have been together -unmarried- for 28 years. In 2008, the twice-married Hawn gave an interview to BBC One's Jonathon Ross in which she stated: "I like that I'm not married. I wake up fresh every day. I could walk out at any moment but we choose to be together." Sound advice for J. Lo's next romantic endeavor, but irrelevant to the newlyweds.

Hollywood heavyweights Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have been married for 23 years, after meeting on the set of Bosom Buddies. Two kids later, Rita confesses that the secret to their success is simple: "We want to be married to each other." This is his second and her first marriage.

Living legend Kirk Douglas and his wife Anne renewed their vows in 2004 on their 50th wedding anniversary. At the reception he sang his wife a song he had written himself, titled "Please Stay in Love with Me," inferring that the secret to longevity in marriage might be politeness.

Congratulations and best wishes to the Lachey and Minnillo families; may the happy newlyweds have their own secrets for a successful marriage to impart in twenty years.
