The man who can be honest to a fault may have to sugar coat his comments when he becomes a first-time dad at the age of 54.

Sources close to Simon Cowell have told reporters the "X Factor" judge is expecting a baby with Lauren Silverman, a 36-year-old New York socialite who is the wife of one of his close friends. But the T-shirt loving Brit is not being cast as a homewrecker. Media reports suggest the couple's marriage has long been on the rocks.

Though Cowell's future may well include marriage, what's more fascinating to observers of this millionaire bachelor is the impending baby carriage. The acerbic critic is not known to mince words.

For instance, when his daughter comes home from her first day of preschool, will he tell her, "To be perfectly honest, Darling, that looks more like a lollipop than a tree"?

We hope not, but old habits could be hard to change.

In his early days as an "American Idol" judge, Paula Abdul was reportedly so upset with Cowell's ripping the contestants apart she would sometimes cry in her dressing room. After one especially dreadful performance he said, "I think that we have to tell the truth here, which is that this singer is just awful. Not only do you look terrible, but you sound terrible. You're never going to be a pop star in a million years."

Abdul told Cowell, "You can't talk to people like that," and he replied, "Yes, I can. In fact, I just did." Eventually, the "Blowing Kisses in the Wind" singer learned to handle her colleague's honesty by teasing him. "Did your father breast-feed you as a child?" she once asked him.

Of course, we're really not that worried Cowell will treat his child like a contestant on one of talent shows. A man smart enough to build a music and TV empire surely knows children have fragile egos and are not miniature adults.

More likely Cowell will be a cool, albeit quirky, dad. The media mogul has a TV in the bathroom of his Los Angeles house so he can watch old cartoons like "The Flintstones" and "The Jetsons" while he takes his morning bath.

Just four years ago, Cowell insisted he didn't want to be a father. "God, no. I couldn't have children. If I had them here drawing on the walls I'd go nuts,' he told a reporter. 'With kids, you've got a routine you can't escape from. You've got to be up at a certain time. Got to listen. When all you want to do is sit in a corner, thinking."

But even an ice cube like Cowell can melt. This past April he was singing a different tune. He admitted to a reporter, "If I knew that I could be -- how can I put this delicately -- faithful. I do like kids. I haven't ruled it out" -- and he confided that he would love to have a baby girl.

What do you think? Will Simon Cowell turn out to be a sensational father? Or is he too self-centered and sarcastic to raise a child? Weigh in below.
