Simon says?

Simon Cowell is reportedly expecting a baby with New York socialite Lauren Silverman, and -- no shocker here! -- mum's been the word from his camp on the subject. The 53-year-old "X Factor" mogul hasn't been quiet in the past when it comes to baby talk, but his confusing stance has us wondering how he's really feeling about his impending diaper duty.

In 2009, Cowell made his opinion on the subject clear when he said, "God, no. I couldn't have children. If I had them here drawing on the walls I'd go nuts. With kids, you've got a routine you can't escape from. You've got to be up at a certain time. Got to listen. When all you want to do is sit in a corner thinking."

According to UK's The Sun he previously said, "I'm not sure if I could deal with the 'ga ga goo' thing. If they could be born at the age of five, I'd quite like that."

Age has definitely played a factor in "The X Factor" creator's stance on the subject. In 2007, Cowell told The Guardian, "I guess I just envisaged that if I had a son and he was 16, 17, I would have liked to have played soccer with him but I couldn't see myself doing that. Not that my life has changed that much since my twenties. I've calmed down a bit, I guess, but I don't feel any more tired than I used to. But it was just that image of my son saying: 'Can we go and play football?' and me saying: 'I can't.'"

He's even gone on record as ruling out having children completely. In 2011, ShowbizSpy quoted the then-51-year-old as saying, "At my age, definitely. The reality is, with the way I live my life, I wouldn't have the patience. I'd sort of want people born at the age of 10, I think."

But in recent years he's softened on the subject. In an interview last year with AOL Music, he said, "I do really, really like kids, because I can talk to them and listen to them. The problem has always been how much time you need to devote to bringing up kids and I've always dedicated all my life to work, and at 52, I've probably missed the opportunity."

And earlier this year he told Britain's Sky News: "Would I like kids?...I do like kids. I'm not sure I would be a good dad for the first six months or so but once they know who I am, I would like it. I definitely haven't ruled out having children. I think I'd rather have my own but then again I wouldn't completely rule out adopting either. If I did have a child, I have to say I'd prefer a girl."

Of course, even though Cowell is currently keeping quiet about his baby news, his pals are talking.

Carmen Electra told omg! she was shocked by her ex-flame's news, but added, "I'm so happy for him…I'm very proud of him and so happy."

And on the daytime chatfest "The Talk," Cowell's longtime friend Sharon Osbourne dished, "I do happen to think he'll be a good father. He is so good with children. People don't know that about him... He said he never wanted to have kids and he doesn't like animals, but he adores animals, and he adores kids."

Now if we can just get Simon to talk!
