The investigation into who really sent the damaging sex tape to the White House finally came to a head in Thursday night's episode of Scandal.

Scandal Flashback: Was Fitz and Olivia's relationship more than a torrid affair?

Gideon (Brendan Hines) believed he had uncovered the story of a lifetime — that the Vice President's Chief of Staff Billy Chambers (Matt Letscher) dated the now-dead aide Amanda Tanner (Liza Weil) — and met with Billy to confront him with the information. Unfortunately, that wasn't the story Billy had been trying to feed him all along.

Turns out it was Billy who had orchestrated Amanda Tanner sleeping with President Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) in order to finally give an identity to the unknown woman's voice that was on the audio sex tape of Fitz and Olivia (Kerry Washington) from so many years ago. But when Gideon revealed that Amanda had been pregnant — likely with Billy's baby — and could prove Billy was behind the President's affair with the aide, Sally Langston's bulldog snapped and stabbed Gideon in the neck with a pair of scissors. Ouch.

"It's gross," says Jenna Bans, who penned Thursday's episode. "I put the blame on [creator] Shonda Rhimes, both the credit and the blame. She was very, very specific about how she wanted that stabbing to go down. I think she even went down to the set that night. She wanted it gory and bloody and she wanted him flailing and grasping at the scissors in his neck. So I would say the sickness and brilliance of that moment both reside with her."

Scandal Scoop: Will Quinn's relationship with Gideon get her into trouble?

What will happen when Quinn (Katie Lowes) returns to her lover's apartment to find him gasping for life? "It's horrific, traumatic and tragic," Bans says. "Just as Quinn and Gideon are forging this relationship, then this happens. The murder will figure in very prominently in the season finale, and you'll see our team try to manage it, and try to manage Quinn's proximity to it."
