Blake Lively

Two notable people were missing from the red carpet at the 2013 Academy Awards: Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively! The newlywed pair was actually thousands of miles away - in Sudbury, Ontario - visiting sick children in the pediatric unit at Health Sciences North.

The pair didn't publicize the visit, but photos posted to Facebook showed them holding babies and smiling for photos with families.

All together now: Aww!

Lively and Reynolds aren't the only celebrities to visit their littlest - and sickest - fans in the hospital, though.

Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber might have a wild side, but he also has a soft side - especially for his young fans. The "Boyfriend" singer has visited dozens of fans in the hospital over his nearly four-year career.

The latest came in January when Bieber stopped by a Salt Lake City hospital to visit 7-year-old Millie Flamm as she battled an illness.

"He was so sweet to her. He walked in and her whole face just lit up. She is squeezing on to it with all her might and will not let it go," her mother told a local newspaper, adding that her face "lit up" when the singer walked into the room.

"It just has re-energized all of us."

Christian Bale

Christian Bale is pretty popular with kids, largely thanks to his role as Batman in Christopher Nolan's reboot of the character. Bale hasn't taken that for granted, either: The British actor regularly visits with his sick fans.

The only way we know about it? The families post information on the web.

For example, Bale sent the family of 4-year-old leukemia patient Jayden Barber to Disneyland in Sept. 2012 - and he even had lunch with the family at the exclusive Club 33 at the resort.

"Christian sent us to LA and we had lunch at Disney club 33 on wed!! He and his family were so awesome and down to earth!!!" Barber's mother wrote on Facebook, along with photos of the pair. "They talked movies and super Heros and he was genuinely happy to hear about everything Jayden wanted to tell him."

In January, Bale also called a young leukemia patient to lift his spirits - and we only heard about it after the family posted the phone call on YouTube.

During the call, Bale talked with young Zach Guillot about all things Batman.

"Anybody can be Batman. Anybody can be as strong as that, and help people and put good out into the world," Bale told the leukemia patient. "…Thanks for carrying the torch and keepin' on playing Batman, okay?"

One Direction

One Direction recently took a trip to a hospital in Ghana on behalf of Comic Relief - and the whole event had a devastating impact on singer Zayn Malik.

Cameras caught Malik in tears after the visit.

"It kind of put things into perspective for me, just in like in everyday life you have like little problems that we think are so major," he said after visiting children in the remote hospital, "and then you go over there and you actually see people that are actually dealing with real problems."
