Russell Brand to Host the MTV Movie Awards - a Look at the Past 20 Years of the Awards Show

MTV and Russell Brand must really love each other. After successfully hosting the MTV Video Music Awards in 2008 and 2009, the network has hired the British comedian, actor and author to host this year's MTV Movie Awards show, next month. Said Brand of the show's potential, "This MTV Movie Awards will be more impressive than 'The Avengers,' and you won't have to wait an hour for someone to Hulk out."

This is the 20th anniversary of the MTV Movie Awards. In 1992, the first host was Dennis Miller and the film that won the night was James Cameron's "Terminator 2: Judgement Day." The film won three major categories for Best Movie, and the male and female Best Performance awards. Last year "Saturday Night Live" cast member Jason Sudeikis hosted and "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" was the big winner, sweeping the three big categories. A "Twilight" film and Kristen Stewart have won Best Movie and Best Female performance for three years running.

Here are some more fun facts from twenty years of the MTV Movie Awards!

They Just Love "SNL" Cast Members - Of the nineteen previous years' awards broadcasts, eleven were hosted or co-hosted by former members of the "Saturday Night Live" cast. The list includes Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, Janeane Garofalo, Jon Lovitz, Jimmy Fallon, Andy Samberg, Sarah Silverman, Miller, and Sudeikis. There also have been only two people to host more than once, Fallon and Myers.

It Used To Be Pre-Taped and In a Different Order - For fifteen years the show was a pre-taped event. Monologues, scripted bits and awards would be handed out in a totally different order than what would be broadcast. This allowed the producers to edit around language and timing issues. However, in 2007 the decision was made to do a fully live broadcast, and since then every show has been produced that way.

They Like to Have Fun With The Award Categories - Some of the categories are pretty predictable and standard movie awards show categories like Best Movie and the Best Performance awards. However, there have also been a few fun surprises. Like in 1996 when the show's producers picked up on the fact that three films had scenes that centered around sandwiches and therefore the Best Sandwich in a Movie award (the ham and cheese from "Smoke" won that award).

Jim Carrey Is Their Comedy God - No other actor has really come close to winning as many Best Comedic Performance awards as Carrey. In total, he's won five times, meaning that since he's not nominated this year, he's won a full twenty percent of the comedic performance awards given out. Last year, Emma Stone won for her work in "Easy A," making her the first female to win the award. This year could also bring another funny lady a win, as both Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig are nominated for their performances in "Bridesmaids."
