RuPaul: I ‘live for’ Honey Boo Boo

America may be undecided about whether or not “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo”—a reality show centered around a 7-year-old beauty pageant contestant from Georgia – is entertaining or the downfall of society, but the show’s sassy star has a big fan in RuPaul. The “Drag Race” creator tells omg!, “I live for that show,” and it’s not because of their shared love of pageantry. “What keeps me there on that show is that child is pure love. She is kind. I’ve got to tell you, I’ve been on this planet a long time, at the top of my list of human virtues is kindness, and she is pure love. The things she comes up with … she’s unpredictable and just lovely! At its core, that family, they love each other and they want the best for one another and that’s just gorgeous.”

RuPaul, 51, loves Honey Boo Boo (real name: Alana Thompson) so much, he wants to record a duet with her and has been actively pursuing her, but with no real luck just yet. (So Mama June, if you’re reading this, call RuPaul so we can have a sequel to “Supermodel (You Better Work)”)

Until he gets the green light from Honey Boo Boo’s mom, he’s focusing on his own hit reality show: Logo’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” which returns on Monday night with an all-star edition. And this season, he tells omg!, is “probably going to blow your minds.”

Since the 12 contestants are all familiar faces, including Pandora Boxx, Jujubee, Mimi Imfurst, and Latrice Royale, the premiere will spend less time introducing the “characters” and just jump right into the drama in the first episode. “There’s one major surprise that I can’t talk about, but it blew the queens’ minds!” raves RuPaul. “They were gagging because they had no idea … We really had to basically add steroids to ‘Drag Race.’”

The massive success of “Drag Race,” which is in its fifth season, comes as no surprise to its mastermind (or should we say, mistressmind). “Honestly, I go into everything expecting it to be a phenomenon,” admits RuPaul. “I love my work, I get excited over beauty and joy and courageous characters and people who are creative … I wasn’t surprised when this show took off because it has all the elements that make it really important to our culture. On the surface, it’s entertaining, it’s fun, it’s campy, but far below the surface it’s about the tenacity of the human spirit and how the spirit will do whatever it takes to be seen and be heard and be recognized. Also, I wanted people to really understand the art of drag, how it is an art form, and it’s an art for that really needs to be recognized.”
