Jon Hamm without a beard

Is John Hamm tired of being just another pretty face in Hollywood? The hunky "Mad Men" star showed up at the Emmy Awards last night hiding half his face behind a full beard.

Though he lost yet again in the lead actor in a drama series category, the man who plays dapper Don Draper managed to make waves by showing up for the awards show in an ivory Armani dinner jacket and salt-and-pepper beard.

Often actors appear at awards shows sporting a different body shape or hair color because of a movie they're filming, but Hamm's reason had nothing to do with acting. "I love not shaving," he told an E! reporter at the Vanity Fair and Maybelline's Mad Men party the night before the Emmy telecast. "I was in England and was working on a project and had been away for four months and I finally got home and I was like, I think I'm done with shaving for a little while."

Not surprisingly, Hamm's new facial hair created quite a stir among the media.

The Hollywood Reporter declared, "The beard is proving to be the new Angelina Jolie's leg." The reference was to a gown Jolie wore to the 2012 Oscars that had a long slit through which her right leg jutted out and received 15 minutes of fame.

The headline on Buzz Feed was "Jon Hamm's Beard Deserves Its Own Emmy." Reporter Jordan Zakarin likened the beard to a "handsome porcupine."

Quick-witted tweeters wasted no time weighing in on Hamm's facial hair.

"Jon Hamm's beard, in itself, is more manly than I am," tweeted Will Kincaid.

Another male tweeter was not impressed. "Jon Hamm's beard is a lantern-cozy made of premium shag carpeting," commented bankbryan.

Meanwhile, Kate Aurthur was "concerned Hamm's doctors will not be able to find his neck." The tweeter was referring to a rumored upcoming throat surgery for the actor to have two polyps on his vocal cords removed.

Despite seeming like a lazy way to shave time off his grooming routine, it took hard work for Hamm's beard to look so effortless. His stylist Diana Schmidtke explained to THR that after moisturizing his face and eyes, she "took to the beard, cutting stray hairs and flyaways to create an even surface before shaping the beard underneath with an electric razor." She also used an in-grown hair treatment "to combat pesky bumps" and ran her fingers through the beard with a grooming paste.

What do you think? Are you mad about Jon Hamm's new beard? Or do you think he's having a bad facial hair month? Weigh in below.
