Obama Praises Anne Hathaway's Catwoman

Anne Hathaway got the chance to rub shoulders with President Barack Obama at a campaign fundraiser on Monday and the commander-in-chief praised her performance as Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises.

Also attending the gathering at the Connecticut home of movie mogul Harvey Weinstein were Vogue editor Anna Wintour, The Newsroom creator Aaron Sorkin, former talk show host Jerry Springer, and actress Joanne Woodward, widow of Hollywood icon Paul Newman, according to a pool report cited by the Los Angeles Times.

After thanking his host and guests for helping out during the current election as well as the last one, Obama gave his assessment of Hathaway's portrayal in the latest Batman film. "I did get a chance to see Batman. And she was the best thing in it. That's just my personal opinion," Obama said.

The president also praised the charity activities of Woodward and Newman. "Joanne and Paul -- just embodied the American spirit in so many ways. And their love story and the way they took so many people under their wing and helped so many people, I think made them something more important than just folks in film."

Sorkin -- who in addition to his latest HBO offering The Newsroom also created the successful White House drama The West Wing -- also received presidential props. "Aaron Sorkin, who writes the way every Democrat in Washington wished they spoke," Obama joked. "Aaron, thank you."
