Yahoo Contributor Network

Portia De Rossi is ready to shine as Lily Munster. The statuesque beauty will take on the role of the glam wife of Herman Munster in "Mockingbird Lane," an updated version of TV's "The Munsters." The new series will be a part of the NBC lineup. Jerry O'Connell will play her Frankenstein lookalike hubby. In real life, of course, Portia is happily married to the lovely Ellen DeGeneres.

Portia's previous TV gigs include such hits as "Ally McBeal," "Nip/Tuck" and "Arrested Development." Like "The Addams Family," "The Munsters" was a 1960s black and white sitcom about the everyday lives of a ghoulish family. Eddie Izzard will play the iconic Grandpa.

In the original series Lily Munster was played by Yvonne De Carlo, Fred Gwynne was Herman and the vampiric Grandpa was well played by Al Lewis.

3 Cool Things About Portia!

On Coming Out

Portia is obviously way out of the closet as she's happily married to a very famous woman. This wasn't always the case for the successful thespian. There was a time when Portia struggled with her identity. The bombshell courageously told Oprah Winfrey, "If everybody who was gay came out in every profession, teachers, doctors, if everybody came out and said, 'I'm gay. Who cares?' it would make a big impact to what's happening with all this teenage suicide."

On Spirituality

Portia and Ellen are very close to spiritual guru Dr. Wayne Dyer. Dr. Dyer performed their wedding and has appeared on Ellen's talk show several times. Portia even appears in Dyer's uplifting and moving film "The Shift." In the must-see movie she plays an uptight woman struggling with her marriage and decisions around parenthood.

On Anorexia

Portia not only came out about her sexuality, she has also come out as a survivor of anorexia nervosa. Her bestselling memoir is named, "Unbearable Lightness: A Story of Loss and Gain." The book is honest, courageous and will help many women and men suffering from shame around these issues.

So what do you think? Is Portia the best choice to play Lily Munster?
