Sorry, Carrie Underwood! The Grammy-winning country singer -- who made headlines for her starring role in NBC's "The Sound of Music Live!" -- probably won't land a part in the network's upcoming live holiday musical, "Peter Pan." The live musical production is coming next December to a TV near you, but the "Sound of Music" star isn't being considered for a role, according to Entertainment Weekly.

NBC entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt confirmed the network would broadcast a live production of J. M. Barrie's classic tale ("Get ready for flying children and some start-of-the-art technology for Tinkerbell!" he announced,) but added that there likely won't be a place in it for Underwood, whose performance as Maria von Trapp was largely panned by critics.

While Greenblatt joked, "I want Miley Cyrus" to play Peter, he later hinted that the lead role could go to a male actor, despite the fact that a female is often cast in the role. (Whew, that was close!)

While no one can ever fill Broadway legend Mary Martin's shoes (the Tony winner played Peter in the 1954 stage production of the show, as well as a record breaking live TV version that debuted in 1955), there's already speculation as to who will take on the highly coveted role next holiday season.

According to Broadway World, in a Today show poll, Broadway veterans Neil Patrick Harris, Kristin Chenoweth and Daniel Radcliffe are among the most requested picks to play Peter. "High School Musical" alum Zac Efron's name has also been tossed around.

But here's another very viable option: How about Chris Colfer? The "Glee" star would be a natural for the part, and he definitely knows a thing or two about Neverland; in 2010 Colfer was photographed at a performance of the musical in California - and he was even flanked by a couple of Lost Boys.

Of course, if producers decide to stick with tradition and cast a female in the role, perhaps they could take a cue from "The Sound of Music Live!" and sign an "American Idol" alum. No, we're not talking Underwood -- we're talking Kellie Pickler! The former "Idol" contestant knows how to sing and dance (did we mention she won "Dancing With the Stars?") and she definitely knows how to rock a pixie cut.

With an air date slated for December 4, 2014, Greenblatt dished that casting for "Peter Pan Live" has been put "on a fast track."

Still, the announcement can't come fast enough!
