Another "American Idol" veteran is taking a run at acting. Paul McDonald, a contestant from the 10th season of the hit singing competition, is heading to the small screen for a role on the NBC show "Parenthood." In what is expected to be a recurring role, Paul will play a musician that charms recording studio assistant Amber. If the star finds success in his new role, he will become the latest "American Idol" alum to make a successful turn to acting. Here is a look at some of the other contestants that made a similar transition.

Jennifer Hudson

Jennifer is still the gold standard for "American Idol" stars becoming actors. Her transition was so smooth that she already has an Oscar. Jennifer, who made a deep run in the show's third season, took home the Best Supporting Actress trophy for the 2006 drama "Dreamgirls." Since that time, she has continued to appear in movies on a regular basis. Her most recent work came with an appearance in the comedy film "The Three Stooges."

Clay Aiken

Clay was the runner-up in the show's second season, but that hasn't stopped him from becoming one of the most popular alums around today. In addition to a solid music career, Clay is no slouch when it comes to acting. He has had guest spots on a number of popular sitcoms, including "Scrubs" and "30 Rock." In addition, he had a long run in a Broadway production of the Monty Python hit "Spamalot." He hasn't broken out in movies yet, but he definitely has a solid acting resume in the works.

Katharine McPhee

Another "Idol" loser, Katharine has found new fame as an actress. She currently plays the lead role on the hit NBC show "Smash." Prior to landing that gig, she had small roles in movies like "The House Bunny" and "Shark Night 3D." She also has a number of TV guest roles to her credit, including turns on "Ugly Betty" and "Community." The second season of "Smash" will begin early in 2013.
