It's that time of year again! Hollywood's award season has kicked off with a bang.

Hot on the heels of the "People's Choice Awards," the Hollywood elite came back with their response to the people with the announcement of the 85th Annual Academy Award nominations on Thursday morning. Each year the Academy has to dole out its fair share of surprises and snubs to keep the stars on the stars.

Here's a rundown of some of the biggest shocks of the day:

Kathryn Bigelow: She may have walked away with the statue for best director in 2009 for "The Hurt Locker," but the director will not be making a repeat appearance for her new film "Zero Dark Thirty." While the film received five nominations including Best Picture and Best Actress, the director was ignored when it came to the Best Director category.

Quvenzhane Wallis: Good things come in small packages! The pint sized actress has been winning raves since the film "Beasts of the Southern Wild" took the Sundance film festival by storm. Now the movie's 9-year-old star has snagged the elusive nomination for Best Actress earning her the title of the youngest actress to receive a nomination.

Ben Affleck: The new film by the darker half of the "Matt and Ben" duo was the sweetheart of the day snagging eleven nominations for everything from Best Original Score to Best Picture. Unfortunately, the actor can't seem to put his "Gigli" past behind him as he was left out of both the Best Actor and Best Director categories.

Seth MacFarlane: The host of the upcoming Oscars received his own nomination for Best Original Song. In addition to his hosting duties, the "Family Guy" star will almost certainly be tapped to perform the song "Everybody Needs A Best Friend" from the R-rated comedy "Ted."

Leonardo DiCaprio: He may be getting rave reviews for his role as plantation owner Calvin Candie in "Django Unchained," but that didn't earn him any love from the Academy. He has been previously nominated for his roles in "The Aviator" and "Blood Diamond" although the actor has yet to earn his own Academy Award.
