Nicole Kidman Celebrates Her 45th Birthday -- A Look at What's She's Doing Next

Yahoo Contributor Network

In the course of her career in acting, which started when she was just 16 years old, Nicole Kidman has played a variety of different characters, and has had some personal highs and lows along the way. Today, on her 45th birthday, she's one of the biggest names in showbiz, and is in as a high a demand as she's ever been. At one point she was one-half of one of the Hollywood's favorite couples perhaps of all time. But when her marriage to Tom Cruise broke up in 2001, her career didn't break apart, but rather it started to take off, and she was able to establish herself as a premier talent in Tinseltown.

She's been nominated three times for an Academy Award, and won the Best Actress award in 2003 for her work in "The Hours." She wowed audiences with her singing and dancing chops in Baz Luhrmann's musical spectacular, "Moulin Rouge," starring opposite Ewan McGregor. In June of 2006 her personal life took a turn for the better when she married country crooner Keith Urban, and the pair have two children together.

So where can we expect to see Nicole next?

She's Going to Be Terrified! - Nicole has completed work on "Stoker," a horror film written by Wentworth Miller ("Underworld") and Erin Cressida Wilson ("Secretary"). The horror film about a mysterious uncle visiting a teenage girl after her father passes away also stars Dermot Mulroney and Mia Wasikowska who audiences may remember from Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland." There's currently no firm release date for the film.

She May Be In For Some More Oscar Buzz - Dramas set in or around World War II make for great films, and often for great Oscar buzz. If that World War II era drama also happens to be based on a true story, then you pretty much have a nomination or two in the bag. In "The Railway Man," you have all of those elements coming together. Kidman will star in the film about a man seeking revenge for his torture at the hands of Japanese soldiers in Burma. The film also stars Stellan Skarsgård and Colin Firth.

She's Stepping Into the Shoes of A Princess - It was recently announced that Kidman would be playing Hollywood icon Grace Kelly in "Grace of Monaco." The film is set to release in 2014 and is being directed by Oliver Dahan ("La vie en rose"). There aren't too many details, but the story will tell the real-life events of Princess Grace's involvement in a dispute between Monaco's Prince Rainier, who happened to be Grace's husband, and France's head of state Charles De Gaulle. No other casting has been announced as of this time.
