Mike Tyson takes Broadway
Theater goers everywhere, we’ve got big news. Following in the footsteps of Robert Goulet, Liza Minelli, and Tommy Tune comes none other than … Mike Tyson? Yep, the boxer is coming to Broadway with a one-man show tantalizingly titled “Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth.”
The show already had a test run at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in April, where the former heavyweight champ talked about everything from his past addictions, to his trouble with women, to his career ups and downs. The New York show, which will have a six-night run from July 31 through August 5, will be directed by Spike Lee and, according to its website, offers "a rare, personal look inside the life and mind of one of the most feared men ever to wear the heavyweight crown."
Perhaps the best promotion of all thus far was Tyson and Lee’s appearance on the “Today” show on Tuesday, where the boxer didn’t pull any punches when he revealed what prompted him to change his lifestyle, saying he was at one time a “prostitute hunter.” "I just threw up the white flag," he told Ann Curry. "There was too many prison cells, too many jails, too many lawsuits, too many bankruptcies, too many women, too many venereal diseases, too many everything. I got tired. I really got tired of, you know, like every time a prostitute … I would head back from a trip, I had to sleep with her. So I just said, 'I'm going to live a different life.'”
And just in case you got the idea that the face-tattooed 45-year-old was going to reveal “everything” during his time on the Great White Way, director Lee set the record straight.
“He will not be literally naked on stage,” the director said.
“Everybody will be disappointed,” Tyson joked. “I’m old. I’m old now.”
But not too old for a brand-new career in theater. See you at next year’s Tonys, Mike!
