Mike Huckabee Stands By the Duggar Family After Josh Duggar Child Molestation Accusations

Mike Huckabee still has the Duggar family's back.

After Josh Duggar, 27, addressed reports first published by In Touch on Thursday that he molested five girls back in 2002 by writing that he "acted inexcusably" as "a young teenager," the 2016 Republican presidential candidate is reaffirming his support for the 19 Kids and Counting stars. The Duggar family campaigned for the 59-year-old politician during his 2008 presidential bid, and they are also endorsing him for his 2016 campaign.

Huckabee has also worked with the conservative Family Research Council -- where Josh Duggar was a lobbyist until his resignation on Thursday -- including co-headlining an FRC event in 2014.

"Josh's actions when he was an underage teen are as he described them himself, 'inexcusable,' but that doesn't mean 'unforgivable,'" Huckabee wrote on his Facebook page on Friday. " ... No purpose whatsoever is served by those who are now trying to discredit Josh or his family by sensationalizing the story. Good people make mistakes and do regrettable and even disgusting things."

He continued to praise the Duggar family's "authenticity" and "humility."

"No one needs to defend Josh's actions as a teenager, but the fact that he confessed his sins to those he harmed, sought help, and has gone forward to live a responsible and circumspect life as an adult is testament to his family’s authenticity and humility," Huckabee wrote. "Janet [Huckabee's wife] and I love [Josh's parents] Jim Bob and Michelle and their entire family."

Huckabee is far from alone in his support for the eldest Duggar child. Plenty of Duggar fans have flooded Josh's Instagram account with messages of solidarity. One much-cited Bible passage was John 8:7 -- which lectures about being judgmental -- reading in part, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone."

"Everyone has a sin they are ashamed of," one supporter wrote. "All sins are the same after all; so who are all of us who claim to know Jesus, to judge. I love your whole family so much and am praying for the whole situation!"
