Viewers have caught brief glimpses of the mother over the years, whether it be the sight of her ankle or her famous yellow umbrella, all of which were filmed with stunt "mothers," including HIMYM director Pamela Fryman.

"Ultimately when we do cast the actress who is the mother, it's going to have to be shrouded in secrecy, so if it already happened and if we already did it, I don't want to say," executive producer Craig Thomas told reporters Tuesday.

The most popular fan pick for Mrs. Mosby over the years has been Robin (Cobie Smulders), even though it's been established since the pilot that she is the "aunt" of Ted's (Josh Radnor) children, played in flash-forwards by Lyndsy Fonseca and David Henrie. Since the Season 7 finale revealed that Robin will marry Barney (Neil Patrick Harris), Robin's pretty much out, but there's one theory being tossed around that may surprise you.

"People keep pitching online that Lyndsy Fonseca should play the mother," Thomas said. "That's creepy! It comes up more than you would think."

Season 8 of How I Met Your Mother premieres Monday at 8/7c on CBS.
