The bride wore red!

Actress Melissa Gilbert married actor-director Timothy Busfield this week, and the blushing bride wore an unconventional red wedding dress.

The 48-year old former "Little House on the Prairie" star -- who showed off her share of dazzling dresses during her stint on "Dancing with the Stars" last year -- tied the knot with Busfield ("Thirtysomething") in a weekday ceremony at San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito, California. It's the third marriage for both of them, which may explain the departure from the traditional white wedding.

But Melissa isn't the only celeb bride who has skipped the white wedding attire. Check out these stars who chose colorful gowns -- and find out why!

Jessica Biel

Jessica Biel wore a gorgeous petal pink wedding dress for her 2012 Italian wedding to Justin Timberlake. The actress told Elle, "I have never been crazy about all-white wedding dresses, for me at least. [Giambattista Valli] had created that same fabric in a fuschia-and-pink combination for a dress in a previous collection, and I asked him if he could create that same pattern in a white combination, and he suggested pink. It was a bit of a leap of faith at the time, but it turned out better than I could have ever imagined."

Amber Tamblyn

In 2012, actress Amber Tamblyn wore a yellow wedding dress for her October wedding to comedian David Cross. Not only that, the "House" actress arrived for the outdoor ceremony in a red canoe! Of her choice of a yellow dress, she told Us Weekly, "It was marigold, and it had a train in the back that was cream. Like a center-piece that was cut out in the middle. There's nothing really traditional about me." As for shoes, who needs 'em? This bride was barefoot!

Gwen Stefani

Singer Gwen Stefani was a pink princess for her 2002 wedding to rock star Gavin Rossdale. The bride wore a pink dip-dyed silk faille Dior gown created by John Galliano. Of her one-of-a-kind ombre dress, Stefani told Elle U.K. , "When I got engaged and someone told me that John said he would make my dress, I was like really? I said I wanted it to be over the top, but not traditional - I wanted it to be everything. But how do you tell this genius over the phone? He was, like, OK, and sent me these drawings of this unbelievable, perfect dress." The iconic dress is now housed at the Victoria and Albert Design Museum in London.

Cynthia Nixon

The "Sex and the City" star wore green when she tied the knot with longtime love Christine Marinoni in 2012. Of her green dress, the actress told Elle, "I knew I wanted Carolina Herrera, because I've had so much luck wearing them in the past and they know my body so well. I liked that this dress kind of looked like an art deco skyscraper. I decided on green by process of elimination: I already knew I didn't want white-I wanted to leave that little-girl fantasy out of it. Maybe it was also years of playing red-headed Miranda: Even though in real life my hair is blond, green has become my go-to. And this particular shade-so light it borders on yellow-was especially apt, since it's the color of early spring, and no matter how long you've been together, a wedding is a certain kind of beginning."
