Meet The Women Behind The 'Animals'

Meet The Women Behind The 'Animals'

History is littered with public figures who have benefited from sharing a "special relationship" -- and while there is a lot to love in Political Animals, USA's new limited run series, seeing Sigourney Weaver and Carla Gugino bring a mutual beneficial fragile friendship to life is a thing of ballsy beauty.

In the six-part series, Weaver plays Elaine Barrish, a former First Lady who becomes The Secretary of State following a failed presidential run. And while there are shades of Hillary Clinton, what the three-time Oscar-nominee does with her role is nothing short of a revelation.

"After being in a restaurant for so many years without anything interesting on the menu, it's been amazing to have all the top chefs suddenly arrive [and] make Political Animals," Sigourney tells TheInsider.com. "Elaine Barrish is such a fascinatingly written person. You root for this woman, who is also a great female leader."

But her desire to lead often comes into direct conflict with her family life, and that's how Barrish becomes involuntarily involved with Gugino's political reporter Susan Berg. But what starts as a contentious collaboration (Berg previously won a Peabody for reporting on the philandering ways of Elaine's husband while he was Commander-In-Chief) evolves into a fascinating friendship where you never quite know who is the puppet and who is the puppeteer.

"What I love about this project was evident one particular day on set when we filmed three scenes, in sequence, and I went from a laugh out loud funny scene to one where I break down," Carla tells TheInsider.com. "It's such a perfect representation of what the show is, and truthfully, what life is."

You can watch the beginning of a beautiful(?) friendship form tonight when the summer's most addictive, intelligent and exciting new series premieres at 10 p.m. on USA. For now, watch a preview!
