Matt Damon has come a long way from "Good Will Hunting." The actor - now celebrating his 42nd birthday - is still working hard. His focus these days? Making movies that matter while helping the world in his own way.

What the Frack?

Damon's biggest project right now is his upcoming film "Promised Land." The movie - co-written with pal and "The Office" star John Krasinski - deals with the controversy surrounding fracking. Fracking, for those who don't know, is the nickname for Hydraulic fracturing, a controversial digging method for oil and natural gas.

Sounds like a pretty controversial topic for a film, right? It is: Damon has been accused of getting funding for the film from oil giants in the Middle East. Other detractors say it's a movie in support of fracking.

"According to sources close to the movie, they (Damon and Krasinski) have come up with a solution - anti-fracking fraudsters (such as Krasinski's character) are really secret agents employed by the fossil-fuel industry to discredit the environmental movement," Phelim McAleer told FOX411's Pop Tarts. "It's a ludicrous twist, a ludicrous movie."

Guess we'll be hearing a lot more about this movie in the coming months.

Working for Clean Water

The actor isn't just a fracking activist. Damon is known for his outspoken views on the U.S. education system - his mom is a teacher - and his work providing clean water for people around the world.

Damon and his partner, Gary White, created in 2009 to help save children in developing countries from water-borne illnesses. The best part for the actor? Giving kids clean water frees up their time for more play, he said.

"I talked to a little girl in Haiti when we were down there earlier in the year," Damon told Bloomberg in September. "In the found time when she wasn't going to go to collect water, she was actually going to have time to play."

New House in Los Angeles

The Boston-born Damon and his Florida native wife Luciana Barroso have strong ties to the East Coast - including an apartment in New York City. However, the pair has decided to put down roots for their four daughters in Los Angeles, according to the U.K. Daily Mail.

The Pacific Palisades home features 13,000 square feet and three floors, according to the Mail. It also features eight bedrooms, six bathrooms and plenty of space for living.

An added bonus? It's located on the same street that BFF Ben Affleck lives on with his wife, Jennifer Garner, and their kids.
