Mary J. Blige Joins Adam Levine’s Team on ‘The Voice!’- What She Brings to the Show

Yahoo Contributor Network

Mary J. Blige is the Queen of R&B just as surely as Aretha Franklin in the Queen of Soul. MJB has a distinct style and voice all her own. It's been a long, fab trip for the colorful leather boots-wearing girl from Yonkers. The 41-year-old is now joining the music competition hit show "The Voice" as a mentor for Adam Levine's team.

Coincidentally, Mary's name was being mentioned as a frontrunner for an "American Idol" judge slot. With Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez saying goodbye to the show that restarted both of their careers there are big shoes to fill at "Idol." However, "The Voice," "Duets" and Simon Cowell's "X Factor" are a part of the next generation of cutting-edge singing competition shows.

When Mary first made her mark in the music of the nineties she was admittedly a little rough around the edges. With her trademark blonde tresses and her don't-mess-with-me attitude she could have been just another girl from the hood. When she opened her mouth in song, however, MJB could move mountains. Mary sang "All I really want, is to be happy" and fans agreed. Now a style icon and entrepreneur as well as a singer, Mary is even BFFs with Oprah Winfrey. About the star Oprah herself says, "I know transformation when I see it."

New Chapter

Blige and Levine have already started filming together. By all accounts, the talented megastars are having a blast. So who else is joining Mary for the can't miss season? Crooner Michael Buble is on Blake Shelton's team for Season 3 of "The Voice." We look forward to upcoming celeb announcements.

Why MJB?

What does the native Noo Yawker bring to the table? We expect Mary to bring a graceful edge to competition as a mentor. Fans also look forward to her great advice on vocal styling. Mary is an expert at conveying emotion and moving an audience through song. These skills will be critical for anyone hoping to advance on "The Voice."

What Levine Thinks

Adam agrees that Mary is the woman for the job. It seems that the two have an easy chemistry between them. The Maroon 5 frontman gushes, "I've always been a huge fan of Mary J. Blige." The feeling is definitely mutual. For her part Mary J says, "I love Adam, he's amazing. I'm so happy to be working with him and his team." Adam's advisers last season included Robin Thicke and Alanis Morrisette.

Will you be watching Mary on "The Voice?" Who else should join the show?
