When it comes to social status, supping with Anna Wintour at her swanky Manhattan apartment is like sipping tea with Queen Elizabeth. Reports that Kim Kardashian and her baby daddy Kanye West dined at the home of the legendary Vogue editor last night suggest the reality TV star may finally be breaking into polite society.

Given that Kardashian's initial claim to fame was co-starring in a leaked sex tape, her climb up the social ladder is nothing short of remarkable.

Unlike the iconic Wintour, about whom the movie "The Devil Wears Prada" was based (Meryl Streep played the icy blonde), Kardashian provokes mixed reactions from celebrity fashion watchers. Her eclectic wardrobe wavers daily between "Wow!" and "What was she thinking?" Only the lucky flies on the wall of Wintour's apartment know if the fashion guru gave any fashion advice to the reality TV star.

The dinner was a prelude to Wintour's prestigious Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art tonight. Tickets for the soiree are highly coveted and Kardashian was excluded from the event last year. Her current invite is akin to finally getting to sit at the cool kids' table in the high school cafeteria.

Of course, it doesn't hurt that the seven-months pregnant celebutante is now coupled with Kanye West, whose coolness quotient is way higher than that of her former husband Kris Humphries. The rapper is rumored to be a performer at the charity event so he likely used some pull to get Kardashian in as his plus-one. According to the New York Post, Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci, who is co-hosting the bash with Wintour, lobbied for his pal to perform, and the latter agreed only if his honey could attend, too.

Having dinner with Wintour the night before the event is a huge feather in Kardashian's cap and will elevate her status beyond that of a gate crasher. With this year's invite list, she is even less likely to stick out as a sore thumb than in previous years since the only questionable celebs missing are Lindsay Lohan, Mel Gibson and Octomom. Controversial figures expected to attend are Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lopez, Kristen Stewart and Tiger Woods (who will be making his first red carpet appearance with new main squeeze, Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn).

As interesting as her dinner with Wintour may have been last night, we would be even more fascinated to overhear her convos at the Met Gala. Will the Kimster seek Gwynnie's advice on prenatal primping? Will she swap stories with K-Stew on their most outrageous tabloid scandals? Or will she and J-Lo share tips on how to wear dresses tight enough to show off a curvy body without busting the seams?

Regardless of what happens tonight, whether the E! star can stay on the celebrity A List remains to be seen. If Anna Wintour replaces momager Kris Jenner as her mentor, she may just have a shot.
