Keith Urban is the newest member of the "American Idol" team, joining fellow newcomers Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey for the 12th season of the show. The group becomes the most eclectic batch of judges in the reality show's history, with pop diva Carey, rapper Minaj and country star Urban joining producer Randy Jackson.

The combination is a great idea, giving the contestants different points of view from varying aspects of the music industry. Here is a look at why Urban specifically is a perfect addition to the "American Idol" cast.

The Show's Past

Urban is the first country artist to sign on to the show as a judge, and might be the most important performer to add to the table. Take a look at the history of the series and it is clear that, despite the judges all being more pop and rock oriented, the "Idol" country stars have achieved the greatest success.

In Season 4, Carrie Underwood won the competition, and has gone on to become one of the most successful performers in the world. With Kris Allen winning in Season 8 and Scotty McCreery winning in Season 10, it is clear that country music has taken center stage on "American Idol." Even the contestants who didn't win, such as Kellie Pickler, Josh Gracin and Bucky Covington, are very talented music stars.

His Success

The fact that there has never been a country music judge on the show is puzzling. With so many country stars rising from the competition, it seemed like a no-brainer to add one to the cast. However, when the last changeover occurred, the show runners chose a pop star and rock singer to sit at the table. In 2012, they finally rectified that with the addition of Urban.

Urban has been a star since he started his career in his home country of Australia. He broke out in America with his second solo album and the No. 1 hit, "Somebody Like You." The man who married Nicole Kidman has won CMA, CMT and Grammy awards for his music and comes to the show with a proven track record. This is finally someone that country singers can learn something from.

With country music so important in the industry right now, Urban might prove to be the best choice of all the newcomers when it comes to helping "American Idol" continue its long reputation of success.
