In the document from 1998 revealed on Mediaite, a White House press aide appears to issue an apology on the former MSNBC anchor's behalf, stating that Olbermann regrets covering the then ongoing Monica Lewinsky sex scandal.

“Keith Olbermann has written to POTUS apologize for, ‘whatever part I may have played in perpetuating this ceaseless coverage (of the Lewinsky story)…. I'll be heading back to my previous career in sports as quickly as possible.'”

Clinton received the note and sent one of his own back to Olbermann, writing:

“Thanks so much for your kind message. I've been touched by the many expressions of encouragement and support I have received from friends across the country. I'm grateful you got in touch with me and I send my very best wishes.”

He returned to MSNBC in 2003 with the launch of his program “Countdown with Keith Olbermann.” The nightly news program ran on the network until 2011 when it moved to Current TV.
