Keira Knightley is no stranger to action films. The 27-year-old already has three "Pirates of the Caribbean" films under her belt and she starred in "Domino," another film from the same genre. Now she's in negotiations to play a role in another action and suspense film as the wife of Jack Ryan, the central protagonist from author Tom Clancy's spy novels that have spawned four films and countless video game spin-offs already.
This film is said to be a prequel, telling the story of Ryan, who has been played previously by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck, before the events of the four other films. The role of Jack will be played by an actor with plenty of experience playing already established characters, Chris Pine. Pine made a big splash in J.J. Abrams "Star Trek" reboot as James T. Kirk, the role made famous by William Shatner.
We thought we'd take a look at some of Keira's predecessors in the role of Dr. Cathy Ryan.
Bridget Moynahan - The 40-year-old actress played the role in 2002's "The Sum of All Fears." In the film though, Cathy and Ryan were not married as of yet. The movie was also the poorest received of all the Jack Ryan films, despite a cast that included Affleck in the lead role, and Morgan Freeman in a top-billed role as well.
Gates McFadden - As it turns out, there was already a connection between "Star Trek" and the Jack Ryan films. In the first screen adaptation of Clancy's work, "The Hunt For Red October," McFadden played the role of Ryan's wife. Gates might be best known as Doctor Beverly Crusher from "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and that TV shows resulting films.
Anne Archer - The veteran Archer is the only woman to have played the role twice. First she played Dr. Cathy Ryan in "Patriot Games" in 1992, then again in the sequel "Clear and Present Danger" in 1994. Anchoring both of those films was Ford, who along with Baldwin are considered to have played Jack the best.
