Katie Holmes avoids Tom Cruise question during interview one day before divorce filing

Katie Holmes must believe in the old adage that if you have nothing nice to say, then you shouldn’t say anything at all. In an interview with C magazine just one day before she filed for divorce from Tom Cruise on June 29, the actress was uncharacteristically ambivalent about her movie star husband when asked about their relationship – which she had previously gushed about every chance she got. When the magazine’s editor Kelsey McKinnon asked Holmes if their daughter, Suri, 6, brought the couple closer together, she became flustered and stammered, “I don’t know. I mean … I don’t know. People have been having babies a long time.”

In fact, when McKinnon went back over the transcript of the interview, she noticed that Holmes, 33, had not mentioned Cruise’s name one time. And knowing now what she didn’t then, the magazine editor also realized the actress was possibly hinting at her life post-Cruise. When talking about her future, Holmes mentioned that she was “ready to take on some more challenging roles” – like being a single mom, perhaps? And when it came to her career, the former “Dawson’s Creek” star added, "I feel like I worked so much at such a young age that I really wanted to have life experiences. I feel more balanced and like I have more to bring to the table. I always felt like I wanted to catch up [in my personal life] to what I was doing [in my career]."

The same day the C interview came out, Holmes and Suri returned to New York City after a long weekend in her native Toledo, Ohio, to visit with family. The mother-daughter duo also did what they do best: shopping. The two were spotted browsing at a local mall and even went swimming in a pool at a local country club.
