Kanye West has been conspicuously absent from the new season of "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" and now we know the real reason why. The 36-year-old sat down with the New York Times to promote his new album, "Yeezus," and said an incident last season changed his mind about reality television.

It all started on a 2012 episode when he convinced Kim Kardashian to throw out all of her skin-tight clothes in favor of monochromatic designer duds.

"Look how dope this s**t is," he told his 32-year-old girlfriend as he looked through the rack of expensive clothes. "[You're] getting on best dressed lists now. You're stepping into this territory."

Kardashian was "freaking out" about the change, but she begrudgingly went along with it. Critics, on the other hand, weren't shy about expressing their disgust over the move.

He was done with the show after that, he said:

"…You know, the amount of backlash I got from it is when I decided to not be on the show anymore," he said, adding that it came from "a place of love."

"And it's not that I have an issue with the show; I just have an issue with the amount of backlash that I get. Because I just see like, an amazing person that I'm in love with that I want to help."

West doesn't have to look far to find someone in the Kardashian-Jenner clan who understands his aversion to E!'s prying camera lenses. Kendall Jenner, 17, also told The Times that she and sister Kylie Jenner don't want to be a big part of the show.

"I don't want to be a big part of the show…. Only because we want for a little while to keep our somewhat normal lives," she said, adding that it's "fun" and gives her "opportunities" to model.

West also seemed to confirm the rumors that he won't let his child appear on future episodes of "KUWTK," telling the NYT that he just wants to protect his family.

"I just don't want to talk to America about my family," he said. "Like, this is my baby. This isn't America's baby."

We're not sure you'll be able to keep America out of your baby's nursery, Kanye - figuratively speaking, of course.

Tell us: Do you think Kanye West is right for wanting to keep his life - and his baby's life - off-camera?
