Kanye West and Justin Bieber Weigh in on Abortion

Sometimes, people forget that celebrities are people, too. Although they live the high life, celebrities still, eat, sleep, breathe and offer their opinions on a wide range of subject, whether those opinions are wanted or not. Opinionated celebrities often display this tendency to act as authorities when matters of politics or religion come up, which can result in a swift backlash from the media and fans. This week, Justin Bieber and Kanye West turned some heads with their views on a highly sensitive topic - abortion. Though neither Bieber nor West has the ability to endure a pregnancy, both musicians weighed in on abortion, with undesirable results.

Bieber, who is 16, explained that he "doesn't really believe in abortion" and noted that his stance included cases of rape: "I think that's really sad, but everything happens for a reason," Bieber said. As a 16-year-old male, Bieber isn't exactly an authority on abortion, but that didn't stop him from opening his mouth, and the internet has been flooded with complaints regarding his comments.

Kanye West, who seems to always be down for stirring the pot, took to Twitter to produce a somewhat poorly worded endorsement of contraceptives, because it also mentioned abortion in a controversial light.

Kanye's tweet (edited for language): "An abortion can cost a ballin' n**** up to 50gs maybe a 100...Gold diggin' b****** be getting pregnant on purpose. #STRAPUP my n*****!"

And although Bieber and West appear to oppose abortions - Bieber for personal reasons and West for monetary ones - many celebrities who have spoken out on this topic agree with their sentiments. For example, Patricia Heaton of Everybody Loves Raymond fame called abortion a "tragedy" and a "huge disservice to women" when she was speaking on behalf of Feminists for Life.

In 2002, Kathy Ireland called the procedure "murder" and spoke out because she felt she had "no choice but to defend the most vulnerable among us." Model Brooke Shields voiced similar views, saying she could "never, ever have an abortion."

However, it's not all one way - many celebrities have voiced support for legalized abortion or Planned Parenthood's organizational goals. According to Life Decision International, actors and actresses such as Alan Alda, Gillian Anderson, Kevin Bacon, Alec and William Baldwin, Ellen DeGeneres, Kirsten Dunst, Lucy Liu, Rob Lowe and Paul Rudd support Planned Parenthood and/or legalized abortion. Meanwhile, musicians such as Ani Difranco, Cyndi Lauper, Barbara Streisand , Christina Aguilera, Iggy Pop and Lisa Loeb are also on Life Decision International's list.
