"Fifty Shades of Grey" is sort of like a really sexy fairytale since virginal heroine Anastasia Steele gets swept off of her feet by an extremely rich and powerful man, so it's fitting that many actors who've starred in fairytale movies and TV series are favorites for the role of billionaire babe Christian Grey. However, "Once Upon a Time" actor Jamie Dornan might be the guy who gives "Fifty Shades" fans the happy ending that they're hoping for.
Ever since "Sons of Anarchy" actor Charlie Hunnam backed out of the role, there's been tons of speculation about who will take his place in the red room of pain. However, studio execs have already compiled a short list of possible replacements. According to Us Weekly, Jamie's competition for the Christian Grey role includes Alexander Skarsgard, Theo James, and Christian Cooke.
Dornan is a former model who currently stars as a serial killer on the BBC series "The Fall." Clearly, he's sexy and he can play a character with a sadistic side. "Once Upon a Time" fans best know him as the Huntsman, a character that he was a little nervous about playing. "My only thing is that Chris Hemsworth is playing the Huntsman [in 'Snow White and the Huntsman'] and he looks like a proper man," he told E! News. "I look like, you know, a woman in drag." A lot of "Fifty Shades of Grey" fans would definitely disagree with his self-assessment.
"Snow White and the Huntsman" actor Chris Hemsworth was also once a big fan favorite for the "Fifty Shades" movie, but Dornan doesn't have to worry about the other hot fairytale huntsman competing with him. Hemsworth played playboy Formula One driver James Hunt in the movie "Rush," and it's this racy role that made him shy away from the idea of playing Christian Grey. "Look, if I took on that role [after James Hunt] it would begin to seem like typecasting," he told the Daily Telegraph.
The star of that other Snow White movie, "Mirror Mirror" hottie Armie Hammer, was also a popular fan pick for Christian Grey. However, he was happy that he was never up for the part. "No one actually offered me the movie," he told Playboy. "But while I was working on 'Lone Ranger' my agent brought it up, and I said 'Nope.' I mean, come on-it's just mommy porn. I'm not going to sit on top of the laundry machine in spin cycle reading about putting a ball gag in someone's mouth. That doesn't do it for me."
Chris Pine was another buff blond actor who was a favorite for "Fifty Shade." The star once said that the movie sounded "interesting." "It'd be a hell of a choice for me, I think," he told "Access Hollywood" last April. However, he was singing a different tune by June during an appearance on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno." He told Leno that he would not be doing the movie. Instead the star signed on to play Cinderella's prince in the upcoming fairytale film "Into the Woods." Former Anastasia Steele favorite Anna Kendrick will play his Cinderella, so this pairing probably fulfilled someone's "Fifty Shades" casting fantasy.
Then there is "Magic Mike" star Alex Pettyfer, who played the beast in "Beastly," a modern retelling of the "Beauty and the Beast" fairytale. Director Gus Van Sant actually recruited Pettyfer to shoot a test scene for "Fifty Shades of Grey," so the actor surely would have been a shoe-in for the role if Van Sant had been chosen to direct the movie. However, the job ultimately went to "Nowhere Boy" director Sam Taylor-Johnson.
Would you like to see Jamie Dornan cast as Christian Grey, or are you a fan of one of the other fairytale actors mentioned above?
