Jack Osbourne Can Still Have A ‘Wonderful Life’ With M.S., Say Docs
Just weeks after becoming a father, Jack was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Although there is no known cure for MS, top doctors say Jack can still have a healthy life with the proper care.
Jack Osbourne, 26, received a major shock when he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at the hospital where, just three weeks earlier, his daughter Pearl was born.
M.S. is an auto-immune disease that targets the central nervous system that can cause problems with walking or seeing clearly. After Jack lost 60% of vision in his right eye, he underwent tests that led to his diagnosis of M.S. In an interview with Today, NBC’s Medical Chief Editor Dr. Nancy Snyderman explained that M.S. is a “diagnosis of exclusion” so in order to diagnose the disease as M.S., doctors have to eliminate other options first.
Unfortunately there is no cure for M.S., but according to Dr. Snyderman, Jack can still lead a healthy, normal life. “It’s likely that with a good team of doctors he’s going to have a robust and wonderful life,” she explains. Dr. Lawrence Weinberg, a neurologist from Northride Hospital Medical Center, describes M.S. as “very treatable” and recommends the “sooner you start treatment, the better.” There are several treatment options including medication, physical therapy, and any activity that can decrease stress. Dr. Snyderman also recommends that Jack keep a “diary of possible triggers” to help keep track of what makes his episodes come and go.
Although Jack has received a devastating shock, he isn’t going to let his disease have a negative impact on his life. “I realized being angry and upset is not going to do anything at this point — if anything it’s only going to make it worse. ‘Adapt and overcome’ is my new motto,” Jack told Hello! magazine. Jack’s positive attitude paired with good medical care may make it possible for Jack to live a normal, happy life raising his new daughter.
