16 Hollywood Stars to Follow on Periscope: Aaron Paul, Shonda Rhimes, Seth Meyers

Twitter released its live streaming video app Periscope on Thursday, and Hollywood didn’t waste any time jumping on board.

Within the first day, Aaron Paul live streamed from a Jack Garratt concert, Al Roker logged on from the Miami Beach centennial concert featuring Andrea Bocelli, “The Voice” offered a backstage tour with Season 7’s Matt McAndrew, Seth Meyers (or someone holding his phone) streamed the “Late Night” show from the set, and Kevin Jonas shared his breakfast with daughter Alena for anyone who wanted to watch.

And those are just today’s videos.

Newsmakers had access to a beta of the app for a couple of weeks before it went mainstream. Recent broadcasts you missed (unless you were one of 5,000 Twitter VIPs invited to the party early) included Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s test stream at an after-school summit, Tyra Banks smizing, Mario Batali cooking, Sophia Bush talking TV with a cousin, Mark Cuban hanging with USC business students and a “Game of Thrones” set tour.

Like Snapchat or Meerkat, there’s no way to go back and watch those older Periscope videos. Twitter offers a limited number of recent video streams on replay, but not everything you missed is available so FOMO (fear of missing out) is a major motivator for watching in real time.

The app, which Twitter acquired in January for a reported $100 million, also offers the option of streaming to the public or limiting your audience to a select number of followers. Shonda Rhimes testing the app with her assistant will never see the light of day unless one of them chooses to upload the footage online.

As for public streams, right now there are two ways to watch: Periscope tweets out a link to video each time a user hits Start Broadcast, or by manually following people within the app to receive notifications when they go live.

Despite being a Twitter product, the app doesn’t automatically sign you up for notifications from everyone you follow on Twitter. With that in mind, TheWrap came up with a starter list of Periscope’s famous early adopters to follow until Twitter offers a celebrity directory, or Periscope’s own version of the verified checkmark.
