Holy Goop, Batman! Healthy lifestyle guru Gwyneth Paltrow smokes cigarettes at parties.
"I smoke one at a party every once in a while," confessed the organic princess to talk show host Chelsea Handler last night while promoting her new movie "Thanks for Sharing."
Though cigarette smoking is not shocking behavior for most celebs, it is a tad surprising the woman who touts the virtues of a vice-less existence on her popular Internet blog Goop succumbs to even the occasional puff of a poisonous substance. No wonder she's so passionate about her seven day detox diet!
In recent years, Hollywood has been under intense pressure to stop glamorizing tobacco use. Medical professionals and parents believe it is seductive for impressionable youth to see their favorite celebs light up on the big screen. But movie companies have historically made big money featuring cigarette product placements in their films and are protected by the first amendment.
In real life, celebrities face different pressures. Some female stars try to give their fans the impression they are poster girls for a healthy lifestyle. Paltrow herself has said, "I would rather die than let my kid eat Cup-a-Soup" and "I'd rather smoke crack" than eat canned cheese. Hopefully, little Apple and Moses will not find their mom's stash of fags.
Most celebrities who smoke cigarettes in public do not pretend to be health nuts. The James Dean of 20-somethings, Miley Cyrus, for instance, makes smoking look cool. In a recent Terry Richardson photoshoot, she is depicted blowing smoke out of her bright red lips.
Wild child Kate Hudson is another star who is comfortable smoking in public. At the Warner Music Group Brit Awards in February, she was "clearly dying for a smoke," a source told the Daily Mail. "Partygoers were stunned to see her lighting up inside The Savoy, which is a pretty ritzy institution, but no one tried to stop her."
Cheryl Cole was snapped smoking in a nightclub at her own 30th birthday bash in Las Vegas. The former judge of "The X Factor" managed to juggle smoking and dancing at the same time.
Poor Salma Hayek never smoked before filming the movie "Frida" and has struggled with the habit ever since. The devoted mom has a love/hate relationship with smoking and has tried quitting several times. A smokeless cigarette company tried to shame her into using its product by outing her. "Salma Hayek has raised some eyebrows when she was caught smoking a cigarette while pushing her daughters stroller," reported the Solar Cigarette blog.
Perhaps the most surprising celebrity smoker is Jessica Alba. The author of "The Honest Life: Living Naturally and True to You" seems even less likely to be a smoker than Paltrow. Despite eating totally organic and selling her own line of eco-friendly household cleaners, she has been spotted on several occasions with a cigarette in her hand. A source hinted at her motives to Life and Style last fall, "She's been chain smoking lately to keep her appetite at bay."
Could be the skinny on why so many stars smoke cigarettes is to stay slim.
