"Because punk, you can go awfully wrong with punk, when you're really over doing it," Heidi Klum told us on the red carpet last night at the Met Ball. "I don't know. It's good in photo shoots. Not really good for real life."
So true! And that's why the "Punk: Chaos to Couture" theme at this year's bash was such a challenge! When I think of punk, the red carpet doesn't even come to mind... I immediately think of Sid and Nancy, safety pins, studs, the Dead Kennedys and mohawks. Oh yes, mohawks; the real deal, back before all this faux-hawk business. Anyway, Sarah Jessica Parker did a high fashion take on the look, sporting a red carpet-worthy mohawk headpiece by Philip Treacy.
"I just honestly, I thought about some of the more kind of archetypal images that come to mind when you think about this particular era,' she said. "And it's hard to ignore the mohawk. And Phillip Treacy, this is his version of thinking about those times."
SJP paired the headpiece with an edgy Gilles Deacon gown and thigh-high plaid velvet Louis Vuitton Boots.
Here are a few other ways the stars went punk:
Madonna in a plaid Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci blazer paired with ripped fishnets - no pants.
Taylor Swift in J. Mendel with sheer side panels. Gorgeous!
Spikey-haired Miley Cyrus in fishnet Marc Jacobs and newly blonde Anne Hathaway in vintage Valentino.
Porcelain-skinned Rooney Mara (the epitome of punk in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) in plunging sheer white Givenchy.
Jennifer Lopez in curve-hugging leopard print Michael Kors and Kerry Washington in purple floral Vera Wang.
Gwyneth Paltrow in a hot pink Valentino ball gown.
Kim Kardashian in floral Givenchy and Ivanka Trump in Juan Carlos Obando gown with thigh high slit.
"Obviously, pregnant punk is a bit of a challenge," Ivanka told us. "But I figured to have fun. I mean this event, every year people just come out. They have a great time, it is great. You have an ability to express yourself in a highly creative way. So it's just always fun."
