‘Game of Thrones’ Star Sophie Turner Defends the Show’s Controversial Scene

HBO’s hit series, Game of Thrones, is known for its violent storylines that leave no character untouched. Yet, the show’s most recent episode, “Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken,” may have pushed things too far with the unsettling end to Sansa Stark’s (Sophie Turner) wedding night.

Following Ramsay Bolton’s brutal rape of his new wife, Sansa, during which he made his captive Theon Greyjoy watch, fans and writers immediately reacted.

Many were disturbed by the sexual violence, which has happened to other female characters on the show. “Rape is not entertainment,” one user wrote on Twitter.

While the episode’s writer, Bryan Cogman, has gone on the defense about the episode, the scene has one unexpected supporter: Sophie Turner.

The 19-year-old actress admitted to Entertainment Weekly that she “secretly loved it.”

“When I read that scene, I kinda loved it,” Turner explained. “I love the way Ramsay had Theon watching. It was all so messed up. It’s also so daunting for me to do it.”

“I’ve been making [producer Bryan Cogman] feel so bad for writing that scene: ‘I can’t believe you’re doing this to me!’” she added, no doubt joking about the torment the writer has gone through following the episode’s premiere on Sunday.

It’s unclear how the controversy will affect the experience of watching the show or what will happen to Sansa’s character since her storyline deviates from the books. But ultimately that’s up to the fans.
