Having a date for The Oscars is a huge deal in Hollywood--like prom, only a million times bigger. Once you're nominated for an Academy Award, the need for someone to share the red carpet with is even greater. Over the years, many actresses have chosen to bring a sibling as their date, often to honor the person who's been supportive of them since the start of their career. That familial love is also the perfect cover for not having a significant other, as was the case for a few of these famous Oscar nominees.

Nicole Kidman: In 2002, Nicole was recently divorced from Tom Cruise, and was considering going solo for her red carpet walk. Instead she opted to bring along sister Antonia, an Australian TV presenter and author who recently had her sixth child. Nominated for an Oscar for her role in "Moulin Rouge," the beautiful Nicole strolled down the runway in a fluttery pink chiffon Chanel gown, her sister in elegant black chiffon.

Angelina Jolie: The often-controversial actress caused a stir at the 2000 Academy Awards when she planted a pretty serious smooch on her date--who also happened to be her brother. Angelina won the Oscar for "Girl, Interrupted," then gushed about how "in love" she was with brother James, which helped along all sorts of rumors . With both looking very goth in all black , and Angie's Morticia-like dress, the two resembled a both happier and creepier version of the Addams family.

Penelope Cruz: The Spanish actress was nominated for an Oscar in 2007 for the Pedro Almodovar film "Volver." This was just before she met future husband Javier Bardem, and the single lady decided to hit the red carpet with her equally gorgeous sister Monica . The two both chose strapless gowns, Monica's a pale blue chiffon, and Penelope's a pale pink feathered number by Atelier Versace. After the ceremony, the pair made a costume change and headed to the Vanity Fair Oscar party. The sisters have always been close, working on several fashion projects, including an upcoming lingerie line from Agent Provocateur.

Maggie Gyllenhaal: The 2010 Oscar nominee for "Crazy Heart" had some serious star power accompanying her down the red carpet. Though actor hubby Peter Sarsgaard was by her side, studly baby brother Jake Gyllenhaal also showed up to lend his emotional support and pose for pictures . Jake looked dapper in a Burberry suit and Ferragamo shoes, while his big sis was luminous in a watercolor blue strapless Dries Van Noten gown . This wasn't the first time the siblings linked arms at the Academy Awards; they also appeared together in 2005 .

Sofia Coppola: In 2004, the "Lost in Translation" director picked up the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Accompanying her on the Red Carpet and at the Vanity Fair after-party was fellow director and brother Roman Coppola. The children of famed director Francis Ford Coppola enjoy working together, with Roman assisting his sis on her Oscar-nominated film as well as "The Virgin Suicides" and "Marie Antoinette." True to their behind-the-scenes nature, the siblings both wore basic black to the 2004 awards ceremony, Roman's velvet jacket possibly more daring than Sofia's understated Marc Jacobs gown.
