Exclusive: James Van Der Beek to Guest-Star on Law & Order: SVU

James Van Der Beek is taking a break from playing himself on Don't Trust the B--- in Apt 23 to guest-star on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, TVGuide.com has learned exclusively.

Van Der Beek, 35, will play a former friend of a doctor who's sabotaging him in the episode titled "Father Dearest," which is currently scheduled to air May 9.

"I'm [going to] do some more serious drama this year," Van Der Beek recently told TVGuide.com. "I love that process. That's what I grew up doing, so sinking my teeth into a meaty role is definitely on the agenda."

Van Der Beek, famous for his role on the WB soap Dawson's Creek, is no stranger to procedurals. In 2007, he had a two-episode arc as a creepy psycho serial killer on CBS' Criminal Minds.

Law & Order: SVU airs on Wednesdays at 10/9c on NBC.
