Emmys 2015: 8 Most Shocking Nominations and Snubs
While we’re excited about the list of nominees -- Transparent (yes!), Jessica Lange (always!!), and Saturday Night Live (40 great years!!!) -- for the 2015 Primetime Emmy Awards, we can't help but scratch our heads at a few nominations -- and snubs. Though, we honestly shouldn’t be surprised anymore that some of the best shows and actors continue to get ignored during awards season. Of course, we’re excited to see some fresh blood injected into the mix and hope that it will continue to open doors for more outstanding performances in years to come.
EMMYS: The 2015 Nominees Revealed!
We broke down the most shocking surprises and snubs among this year’s races.
1. SURPRISE: Tatiana Maslany’s First Emmy Nom!
Well, it really is not a surprise that Maslany would pick up a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Orphan Black. Over the course of three seasons, the actress has proven just how talented she is. But this is the first year the academy has recognized the actress come awards time. This follows her first-time nomination at the 2015 SAG Awards.
2. SNUB: Only One Major Nom for Empire
As Cookie Lyon, Taraji P. Henson more than earned her nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. However, it was sad to see the rest of the show not recognized for its record-breaking ratings and camp appeal.
3. SURPRISE: Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series
First off, welcome to the inner circle, Amy Schumer. You have officially arrived after a breakout year with the third season of Inside Amy Schumer, which picked up seven total noms. And kudos to the academy for recognizing Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation), Lisa Kudrow (The Comeback), and Lily Tomlin (Grace & Frankie) in addition to mainstays, Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep) and Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie). This is going to be one tight race!
4. SNUB: Alex Borstein, Ellie Kemper, and Broad City Ladies Getting Left Behind
While we love most of the names listed for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, we felt that the academy could have skipped over Falco this year and made room for other outstanding performances from Ellie Kemper (The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Alex Borstein (Getting On), and our favorite duo, Broad City’s Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer.
5. SURPRISE: All the Love for American Crime
Really?! Did anyone watch that show? ABC’s limited series starring Felicity Huffman picked up 10 nominations. Luckily for the show, the categories for Limited Series, Movie or a Special continue to be a strange fight. This year, American Crime will go up against (and likely lose to) the likes of American Horror Story: Freak Show and HBO’s Bessie starring Queen Latifah.
6. SNUB: Where’s The Affair?
Seriously? After picking up two Golden Globes -- Best Television Series, Drama and Best Actress (Ruth Wilson) -- we thought the series was a guaranteed at least noms in those respective categories. The Showtime drama was woefully overlooked.
7. SURPRISE: Adam Driver for Girls
Adam Driver picked up his first Emmy nom for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. And it’s about time! Easily the best part of HBO’s show about a bunch of girls, Driver’s performance this season cut through all self-loathing and revealed new layers to Adam’s character. Surprisingly, the show as a whole fell from grace, only picking up two noms, with the other going to Gaby Hoffman for her guest appearance on the show.
8. SNUB: Jane the Virgin Gets... Narrator?
Just like The Affair, this show was surprisingly left out in the cold. The CW comedy only picked up one nom (for Outstanding Narrator), which is a shame considering Gina Rodriguez’s Golden Globe win earlier this year. Despite the growing appeal (and critical praise), CW and ABC Family series continue to get overlooked during awards season.
