Does Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman Measure Up? Comparing Catwomen in History!

Yahoo Contributor Network

Anne Hathaway has come a long way from "The Princess Diaries." The brunette beauty is making waves as the latest in a long line of gorgeous actresses to play Catwoman in various iterations of the "Batman" franchise. Her new film, "The Dark Knight Rises," is the third in writer-director Christopher Nolan's take on the series.

Anne's Selina Kyle is a key part of the evolved comic book story but not all of it. Christian Bale plays the Knight himself, of course. Bale and Hathaway are joined on the silver screen by an all-star cast. Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox round out the acting team.

Undoubtedly, Anne should be proud of her work because there's already talk of a spin off. Nolan had only praise for the starlet during a recent press junket. He gushed, "Anne is incredibly precise and articulate about the psychology of the character. She's really built it from the ground up, it's just a delight to watch her perform." The director also couldn't resist AH's charms as an action hero. He explained, "The things she does in those heels is not to be taken lightly."

Perfectionist Anne wanted to look the part in addition to bringing her acting chops. To don the famous catsuit Anne told Allure Magazine that she took dance classes five days a week. "The Devil Wears Prada" thespian dieted too. She claimed to be "living on hummus and radishes." She even called the Catwoman suit "a psychological terrorist." We're not fans of radical dieting but Anne looks great on the big screen.

Fans of the "Dark Knight" know that Anne is not the first diva to take on the role of the feline femme fatale. Several bold and beautiful actresses have played Batman's most stylish adversary.

So, what else has played the womanly cat?

Julie Newmar

Newmar's website calls her "The Original Catwoman" and indeed she is. Julie played the role to "purrrrfection" in the 1960s "Batman" TV series. Her man in black on the campy program was Adam West. The actress was an undisputed sex symbol, even appearing in a Playboy Magazine pictorial.

Eartha Kitt

Eartha took over for Julie for the final season of the TV show. It was groundbreaking at the time for an African American actress to be cast in such a bold and sexy role. Kitt was no slouch, however. The songstress was already well-known for her work on stage and screen as well as her activism.

Michelle Pfeiffer

The "Dangerous Liaisons" star brought her own style to the role. Michelle played Catwoman in Tim Burton's "Batman Returns." Michael Keaton was her Batman. The 1992 film also starred Danny DeVito. Michelle's Catwoman was smart and sexy.

Halle Berry

Halle Berry's "Catwoman" was a spin off flick where the feline starred on her own. Despite memorable talk show appearances where Berry demonstrated her whipping skills, the flick was universally panned. Halle showed her sense of humor by taking it all in stride. When the film received seven Razzie nominations for being "the worst," the Oscar winning actress even showed up to accept an award.

Veteran actress Lee Meriwether also took on the kitty role in a 1966 film version of "Batman." So what do you think? Where does Ms. Hathaway rank on this list?
