Dane Cook Apologizes For Insensitive Colorado Shooting Joke About ‘Dark Knight Rises’

Dane Cook waited less than a week to make a controversial joke about the shooting in Aurora, Colorado that claimed 12 victims. Do you think he was out of line?

Early last Friday, James Holmes walked into a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado and shot 71 people, killing 12. Last night, Dane Cook tried to commemorate this event by making fun of it.

“This movie is pretty much a piece of crap,” Dane said about The Dark Knight Rises, at Hollywood’s Laugh Factory, “I know that if none of that would have happened, pretty sure that somebody in that theater, about 25 minutes in, realizing it was a piece of crap, was probably like, ‘Ugh f**king shoot me.’”

Dane received a few laughs from the audience, but today the reaction has been less than stellar. He seems to acknowledge his poor taste in a tweet last night, “I’ve got a feeling something really bad is about happen but I’m gonna stick around to see if I’m right.”

Do you think Dane was in poor taste to make this joke just hours before the one week anniversary of the shooting? Was it too soon? Or was he just being funny? Sound off below.

UPDATE: Dane apologized on his Twitter saying, “I am devastated by the recent tragedy in Colorado & did not mean to make light of what happened. I made a bad judgment call with my material last night & regret making a joke at such a sensitive time. My heart goes out to all of the families & friends of the victims.”
