On Tuesday night's "Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars" it was the end of the road for two all-star contestants, just one week shy of the semi-finals.
While it may not have been a total shock that Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy were eliminated (the couple's cumulative judges' score was miles below their competitors'), Tuesday's show also meant the last dance for one of the top-scoring couples of the season.
Actor Gilles Marini and his pro partner Peta Murgatroyd were given the news that their time was up, despite the fact that they earned near-perfect scores for their quickstep and their salsa trio this week with pro dancer Chelsie Hightower. A clearly disappointed Marini told the judges of his time on the show: "I had the chance to do it twice, I tried my very best. Peta was an angel out there, teaching me amazing things. It was an incredible experience."
For some reason the judges laughed after Kirstie Alley said, "I learned more about dancing ... really. I just love dancing. I want to thank Maks for being so patient with me, so helpful, and thanks to the judges because their critiques really helped me."
Gilles took his ousting especially hard, composing a series of Twitter posts apologizing to his fans for letting them down. Later he tweeted, "The hardest part of the night was to explain to my Mom that I am done with @DancingABC :( Her heart broke! I'm feeling awful!"
Alley's tweets were a bit more lighthearted. The actress tweeted: "Good night my sweet friends!!!! See you at the finale doin some crazy assed dance !! Party on young lovers, party on!!! Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz"
Perhaps the biggest letdown of the night is the fact that we won't get to see Gilles and Peta perform a "Mad Monk" merengue next week; that's the dance style and theme that was assigned to them by Apolo Ohno and Karina Smirnoff earlier in the evening.
During a late night appearance on " Jimmy Kimmel Live," real life couple Maks Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgatroyd sat behind their castoff partners. When Kimmel joked about the irony that Maks and Peta -- who have been dating since earlier this year -- were both eliminated the same week, the Ukrainian dancer joked, "I'm a little upset. I can't even get eliminated by myself!"
When asked by Kimmel if he would be back next season, Maks said, "I don't know who out there can top this. I feel like I need at least two partners next season, at the same time, to peak Kirstie Alley."
The "Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars" week 9 performance show airs on Monday, 11/19 at 8 PM ET on ABC.
