'Dancing with the Stars' Season 16 Week 4: Judges Go Easy on Contestants

This week on "Dancing With the Stars," the contestants drew from personal experiences and reminisced about the best years of their lives. Maybe the sentimental nature of the performances had something to do with it, but it seemed that the judges were going pretty on the contestants this week.

Aly Raisman and Mark Ballas topped this week's leaderboard with a "Titanium"-themed contemporary routine. They earned a score of 27.

After watching compelling routines by Stacey Tookey and Travis Wall on "So You Think You Can Dance," this just paled in comparison. Mark is ballroom dancer, so obviously he was working outside his comfort zone.

And while I love Aly as a gymnast, I'm not sold on her as a dancer. Her performances have strength, technique, and even emotion, but somehow lack grace. I find the figure skaters like Kristi Yamaguchi and Dorothy Hamill more elegant and appealing to watch on the dance floor.

This week, D.L. Hughley channeled his inner eighth-grade nerd, and had the stiff awkward moves to match. However, all it took was shaking his hips and blowing kisses for the judges to reward him with a trio of 7's. He and Cheryl Burke earned a score of 21, which he joked was higher than his SAT scores. (So much for having been a nerd in school!)

Did anyone else think that Lisa Vanderpump's fainting spell looked staged? The way she keeled over during rehearsal looked very theatrical. Her partner, Gleb Savchenko, seemed to suspect she was faking as well, as he didn't immediately rush to her aid.

In any case, Doc Hollywood told her that she was suffering from fatigue and warned her to not over-exert herself.

Due to the missed rehearsal time, she and Gleb ended up at the bottom with a score of 18. Will shirtless suspender-clad Gleb garner enough votes to save them?

Several contestants paid tribute to their significant others. Kellie Pickler dedicated her rumba to her husband, Kyle Jacobs, while Ingo Rademacher dedicated his performance to his wife, Ehiku.

Kellie and Derek Hough earned a score of 26, while Ingo and Kym Johnson earned a score of 23.

While Kellie and Derek, Ingo and Kym gave performances that came across as heartfelt and sincere, Sean Lowe's performance made me cringe.

The "Bachelor" dedicated his performance to 2012, the year he met his fiancee. I'm growing weary of the way Sean is always having to remind everyone that he's with Catherine. It all seems like he's overcompensating. If you're really that in love, then you wouldn't have to continually bring it up all the time.

That solo at the end felt very contrived, and it seemed like Catherine didn't want to be dragged into this performance. I know that Kellie also kissed her husband at the end of her performance, but Kyle had been on stage with her, so it felt more natural.

In any case, Sean and Peta Murgatroyd earned a score of 20.

Other Scores

Zendaya and Val Chmerkovskiy earned a score of 26. I'm really liking Val more and more. After spending the All-Stars season steaming it up with Kelly Monaco, he's showing a different side. Who knew he was so great with kids? He knows how to create fun inventive routines that showcase Zendaya's strengths, while still remaining age-appropriate.

Jacoby Jones and Karina Smirnoff are still in this, having earned a score of 24.

Andy Dick and Sharna Burgess earned a score of 21, their best score yet. This guy is clearly the sentimental favorite. He's really trying to improve himself, not only as a dancer, but also as a person. We know his daughter will be very proud of him!

Victor Ortiz and Lindsay Arnold earned a score of 18, putting them at the bottom with Lisa and Gleb. I could see either of these couples going home. I guess it will come down to whether or not the viewers preferred shirtless Victor to shirtless Gleb.
